Liberal Mayors Network

LIBERAL MAYORS NETWORK

Responding to a growing demand to hear the voice of liberal mayors on matters of European relevance, the President of the ALDE Group, Bas Verkerk, Mayor of Delft, convened a meeting of mayors during the 2015 ALDE Party Congress in Budapest to discuss migration, refugees and integration.

The positive response from many liberal mayors to this initiative revealed a clear demand amongst the mayors themselves for this kind of initiative. The meeting therefore also marked the launch of a new Liberal Mayors Network, which will be meeting annually during the ALDE Party Congress.

During the Liberal Mayors Summit in Warsaw twenty mayors from fourteen different European countries discussed and agreed a document setting out the Principles which make cities and local communities liberal, and the actions that a Liberal Mayor should take.

At the 4th Liberal Mayors Summit which took place on 2 December in Amsterdam participating mayors from across Europe together launched a call for action for Europe Day on 9 May 2019.

At the 6th Liberal Mayors Summit in 2020 more than 60 mayors & regional leaders call for a Sovereign, Decentralised, Federal Europe after our special Europe Day summit, hosted by President François Decoster, with a special rendition of Ode to Joy from Bratislava, courtesy of its Mayor Matúš Vallo, issuing a declaration with 9 points for 9 May.

The 7th Liberal Mayors Summit will take place on 26 November 2020. Together with the European Commission Vice-President Vera Jourová mayors will discuss the EU’s first Rule of Law report.

Liberal Mayors take action to protect democracy

4th Liberal Mayors Summit takes place in Madrid

The largest Liberal Mayors Summit so far during the ALDE Party Congress in Madrid, Spain on 9 November 2018, calls on all liberal mayors around the world to help protect democracy from the rising trend of authoritarian, illiberal, anti-pluralist leaders. With a majority of the world’s population now living in urban areas, city mayors have the power and the responsibility to strengthen the pillars of local democracy, and thus prevent authoritarian leaders from establishing vital roots in towns and cities.

3nd Liberal Mayors Summit takes place in Amsterdam

During the 3rd Liberal Mayors Summit, participating mayors from across Europe together launched a call for action for Europe Day on 9 May 2018. The European Union has been under attack from populists inside and outside the EU trying to undermine its achievements and values. The time has come for a counter-offensive by all pro-European political forces to regain the hearts and minds of citizens. We call on liberals to join us in mobilising local politicians and civil society for a large pro-European movement on 9 May 2018.

Liberal Mayors Summit agrees Principles that Make a City Liberal

2nd Liberal Mayors Summit takes place in Warsaw

During the Liberal Mayors Summit twenty mayors from fourteen different European countries discussed and agreed a document setting out the Principles which make cities and local communities liberal, and the actions that a Liberal Mayor should take. They also shared best practices on social mobility. Social mobility is focused on how reforms can increase upwards mobility both in terms of job status and in terms of income. European countries have much in common but also significant differences in their approach to social mobility. This second Liberal Mayors Summit during the ALDE Party Congress offered a real opportunity to share how liberal mayors can create equal opportunities for all.
