Our member Andres Jaadla continues his commitment to environmental causes as he attended the 8th European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns in Bilbao while also recently becoming a CoR ambassador of the Covenant of Mayors. The event was hosted by the President of the Basque Country.
The first post-COP21 EU-wide event on sustainable development and local governments was held in the Basque city of Bilbao. It demonstrated the urgent need for actions by local governments in shaping Europe’s future. It linked climate and sustainable development global challenges with the economic, financial and social challenges regions and cities of Europe have to face at the moment. The president of the Basque country, our member Mr. Iñigo Urkullu welcomed CoR members, including Andres Jaadla (Estonia), our ENVE-commission coordinator, for the 8th European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns.
In June, Andres Jaadla reiterated his commitment to tackle climate change by becoming ambassador of the Covenant of Mayors. In the presence of the EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy – Miguel Arias Cañete – the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) launched the group of climate Ambassadors where its members, including Jaadla, pledged to promote the environmental and economic benefits of the Covenant of Mayors. He will become a climate emissary, speaking at international events and encouraging towns, cities and regions to join the Covenant of Mayors.
