Irina Talviste and Pär Löfstrand Appointed to Lead Simone Veil Pact at Subnational Level

In a significant step to reinforce gender equality across Europe’s regions and cities, the Renew Europe Group in the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) has appointed local leader from Pärnu (Estonia) Irina Talviste and from Östersund (Sweden) Pär Löfstrand as coordinators for the implementation of the Simone Veil Pact Action Plan at Subnational Level.

The Simone Veil Pact, endorsed by the Renew Europe Group, outlines five core principles: defending sexual and reproductive rights, supporting family life, combating gender-based violence, ensuring equality at work, and promoting political representation. The appointment of two dedicated coordinators for the implementation of the Subnational Action Plan marks a renewed push in the new 2025 – 2030 CoR mandate to turn these principles into action throughout Europe’s cities and regions.

Irina Talviste, a local political leader, board member of a women’s shelter, and former president of her hometown’s BPW club (Business and Professional Women Club), brings years of practical experience to the role.

There is great polarization among our society and it is difficult to bring about changes in already established opinions. However, we need to pay more attention to the formation of young people’s opinions and attitudes, as the needs of both sides need to be considered to achieve concrete results.” – Irina Talviste at the Renew Europe Group Meeting, 14 May 2025.

Pär Löfstrand, a psychologist and researcher specializing in gender, attitudes, and stereotypes, emphasized the deeper societal patterns that perpetuate inequality.

So much of inequality comes down to how we see each other – how we speak about and treat people based on things like gender, age, and ethnic background. Change doesn’t just happen through laws or policies – it starts with how we think, how we talk, and how we treat one another in everyday life.” – Pär Löfstrand at the Renew Europe Group Meeting, 14 May 2025.

In his speech, Löfstrand also highlighted the importance of addressing broader gender-related challenges such as mental health issues among young women, honor-based violence, and the underachievement of boys in schools.

The Renew Europe Group is proud to support Irina Talviste and Pär Löfstrand in their roles and looks forward to working with them to implement concrete actions under the Simone Veil Pact. Their combined expertise and commitment will be instrumental in ensuring that equality becomes not just an ambition, but a reality – across all European regions, for all citizens.
