Celebrating Europe Day in Luxembourg

We call on liberals to join us in mobilising local politicians and civil society for a large pro-European movement every 9 May. This year we focused on how Luxembourg celebrated Europe Day, as it is the first EU country to make 9 May an official public holiday. video

The European Union has been under attack from populists inside and outside the EU trying to undermine its achievements and values. That’s why pro-European citizens, civil society, media and politicians are calling for revitalisation of the European dream and renewed impulse to the EU integration as the best form of protection for Europeans in the 21st century.

Celebrating Europe Day is part of this counter-offensive by all pro-European political forces to regain the hearts and minds of citizens; to bring the EU closer to its citizens. Our dedicated website lists some useful tips and suggestions – in all EU languages – for planning future Europe Day celebrations.

This year, Luxembourg became the first EU country to make 9 May an official public holiday. This symbolic event was celebrated in Luxembourg city with the unveiling of a monument of Robert Schuman and festivities in and around the main square, with our member Simone Beissel, Vice-Mayor of the city of Luxembourg, joining. Also present was our Vice-President, François Decoster, Mayor of Saint-Omer, France.

Simone Beissel:

It’s important to celebrate Europe Day because Europe is at crossroads. We have a peace project since a very long time but Europe is unfortunately not that well known among younger people. So populists and ultra-nationalists have it easy to question Europe, to spread nationalism which has led to wars and a catastrophe on this continent. Europe needs to be known, celebrated; it’s our life insurance and our project for the future.
